Debbie Hewitt MBE, Chair of The Football Association (The FA), joined the Sport Integrity Global Alliance (SIGA) to celebrate International Women’s Day and to promote female leadership in sport.
During her participation in yesterday’s SIGA Summit on Female Leadership in Sport, and on today’s SIGA WoW show, Debbie showcased her personal history to highlight the importance of gender diversity in sports leadership.
As the first woman to chair The FA, Debbie’s appointment and commitment to supporting gender diversity in sports leadership signals a new era for the development of English football and the wider sports industry.
During the SIGA Summit on Female Leadership in Sport, hosted by SIGA’s founding Member Mastercard, Debbie emphasised the growing impact of women in sports leadership, while providing many current examples of women who are breaking the gender glass ceiling.
On today’s SIGA WoW show, hosted and produced by Katie Simmonds, SIGA’s COO and Managing Director #SIGAWomen Programme, Debbie reiterated her commitment to promoting female leadership and encouraged women in sports to take advantage of all initiatives to improve their skills, which would help to advance their careers. The FA’s Chair highlighted the SIGA Women Global Mentorship Programme as a valuable resource for women in sports leadership and urged women in sports to be hungry to learn and to take advantage of thought leadership programmes to support their development.
Inspiring women in Sport, Debbie shared a powerful and provocative thought: “My message to all women is: be hungry to learn. Every situation is an opportunity to learn and develop, so enjoy and learn from the journey and don’t focus too much on the end game. Trust yourself, trust your inner voice, and when you feel the fear, just do it anyway. The global game needs a pipeline for the next generation of female leaders, and networks and mentoring can help – especially through programmes like the SIGA Global Mentorship Programme.”
