SIGA statement – European Club Association
05 September 2017
Following today’s ECA General Assembly in Geneva, SIGA Coordinator and former EPFL CEO, Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros, has released the following statement:
“On behalf of the Sport Integrity Global Alliance (SIGA), I would like to congratulate Andrea Agnelli, who has today been appointed as Chairman of the European Club Association (ECA). We wish Andrea and his team the best of luck in continuing the great work of his predecessor, and now honorary ECA Chairman, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
“I worked very closely with Kalle, in my role as CEO of the European Professional Football Leagues (EPFL), to bring about much-needed governance reforms, enhance football’s standards and ensure due recognition for the role of the leagues and clubs. I have experienced first-hand the great work he has done at ECA and valued the excellent dialogue and cooperation we always maintained, both at personal and institutional level. His new role as Honorary Chairman pays him a fair tribute for the significant role he has played in the development of European club football, and I would like to congratulate and thank him for his commitment and dedication to protecting the integrity of the sport over the past nine years.
“SIGA is also delighted to note that further good governance reforms were adopted during the ECA General Assembly in Geneva today, including the introduction of term limits for Executive Board membership and enhancing transparency in the appointment of ECA representatives.
“With the microscope having never been more focused on Europe’s elite football clubs, SIGA stands ready to cooperate with the ECA and other key stakeholders, and foster further reforms to help protect the integrity of football and, consequently, its overwhelming popularity and unrivalled social impact.”
