The “GOOD GOVERNANCE IN SPORT: FROM THE REGION TO THE WORLD” took place today in Doha, Qatar. Delivered in conjunction with hosting partner Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU – UNESCO Chair on Governance & Social Responsibility In Sport) and Media partner Al Kass.

The event was opened by SIGA Senior Director of Knowledge, Research and Innovation Iain Lindsay who set the scenes for this Sport Integrity Week event and welcomed a distinguished list of speakers and guests.

This was followed by a Welcome Address by SIGA’s Global CEO Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros and Christos Anagnostopoulos, Assistant Professor in Sport Management at HBKU and UNESCO Chairholder, it was noted that Integrity and Good Governance are essential pillars towards a Sporting future built on Integrity, Transparency and Good Governance.

Keynote Speeches followed by ICSS Chair and SIGA Vice-Chair Mohammed Hanzab and Legal Affairs Director, Qatar Olympic Committee, HE Sheikh Ahmad Bin Nooh Al Thani respectively.

The first panel “Mastering Global Knowledge Exchange: Importing Expertise, Exporting Excellence” had Professor Craig LaMay from Northwestern University in Qatar moderate Professor Valter Di Salvo, Director of Football Performance &Science at Aspire, Talar Sahsuvaroglu, Environment and Sustainability Senior Manager at the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, and Massimiliano Montanari, CEO of the International Centre for Sport Security, sharing their insights on how the communication and cooperation amongst countries, federations and clubs is in order to share knowledge and best practice.

Hani Ballan, CEO of QSL then gave a keynote speech emphasizing this need of cooperation and transmitting a positive message towards a more transparent football world.

The second panel “Football in the Middle East: Using Integrity as a Growth Catalyst” was moderated by Christos Anagnostopoulos and had the participation of Professor Simon Chadwick, Skema Business School in France, Ahmed Abbassi, Executive Director of Competitions at Qatar Stars League, Mariama Bukari, Founder of Black Strikas, and Adel Saad, Founder and CEO of sKora Technologies, discussed the exponential growth of football in the Middle East and the role of integrity in maximizing beneficial growth in clubs, fans and athletes.

Panel number 3 “Passing the Torch: Enabling the Next Generation of Leaders in Sport” had Eleni Polymenopoulou, Associate Professor at HBKU, as moderator with the speakers Kamilla Swart, Associate Professor, Director of MSc Sport Management Programme at HBKU, Ali Abdullah Jifri, Professor in Sport at University of Jeddah, Danyel Reiche, Associate Professor at Georgetown University, and Gerard Akindes, Visiting Scholar at Northwestern University. The panel shared perspectives on how the next generation needs to be educated in order to create more leaders and guide the sporting world in the right direction with integrity at its core.

Iain Lindsay, Senior Director of Research, Knowledge and Innovation at SIGA closed the ceremony outlining SIGA’s projects, including the launch of their Executive Education Certificate on Good Governance in Sport, and shared a strong call to action to the entire Sport Industry to join SIGA and push their ambitious reform agenda forwards.
