The Global CEO of the Sport Integrity Global Alliance (SIGA), Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros, and the President of the Portuguese Swimming Federation (FPN), António José Silva, have just put ink on paper formalising a far-reaching Memorandum of Understanding that paves the way towards a close and action-oriented cooperation in the field of sports governance and integrity.

Besides becoming a Member of SIGA, the FPN has achieved its goal to be the first major Portuguese sporting  federation to adopt the SIGA Universal Standards on Sport Integrity and go through the SIGA Independent Rating and Verification System (SIRVS) .

The agreement, aimed at promoting greater integrity, transparency and accountability in Sport, sets out the primary purposes of both parties, as well as the relevant areas of cooperation and priorities to be pursued with immediate effect, including but not limited to:

  1. To promote Sport’s positive values;
  2. To raise awareness on the social, educational, cultural and economic role of Sport;
  3. To contribute to achieving integrity and fairness in Sport;
  4. To enhance integrity, transparency and accountability in Sport;
  5. To foster the adoption of best practice on development and safeguarding of children and young people in and through Sport; and
  6. To support the development of SIGA’s thought leadership initiatives, including the implementation of the SIGA Universal Standards on Sport Integrity and the SIGA Independent Rating and Verification System (SIRVS).

Commenting the agreement, the SIGA Global CEO, Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros, stated:

I am delighted to welcome the Portuguese Swimming Federation to the SIGA family and wish to personally congratulate its President, António José Silva, for standing with SIGA  and supporting our effors to further advance Sport Integrity worldwide. Similarly, I wish to congratulate the Portuguese Swimming Federation for becoming the first sporting federation in the country to adopt our universal Standards and go thought SIRVS. Leadership is not proclaimed; it’s exerted. And that’s the remarkable example that the Portuguese Swimming Federation has just showed. We look forward to working with António and his great team!”

António José Silva, President of the Portuguese Swimming Federation, stated:

The Portuguese Swimming Federation is proud to become a SIGA Member and honoured to support its efforts to usher Sport into a new era of integrity. We are fully committed to SIGA’s Universal Standards on Sport Integrity, and we want to lead by example, not only at national level, but also internationally. That is why the FPN has decided to become a SIGA Member and submit its own governance to the independent scrituny that SIRVS stands for. Partnering with SIGA is our way of adhering to the best practice in this field.
