Day 5: Africa and Latin America Lead the Charge
For the first time, the Sport Integrity Week reached Africa, marking a historic moment for the continent’s engagement in this global initiative.
- Ghana hosted the seminar “Promoting Integrity: Fixing the Challenges to Sustainable Sport in Ghana” at the Accra Sports Stadium’s Media Center, organized by the National Sports Authority. This live-streamed event fostered essential conversations on challenges and opportunities for sport integrity in the region.
- Based in Nigeria, the Initiative for Development through Sport held the webinar “Building a Culture of Integrity – Strengthening Sports Laws and Regulations in Africa”, addressing key issues for the continent and advocating for stronger governance frameworks.
Day 5 of SIW2024 was also marked by the SIGA Youth Forum 2024: the SIGA Youth Council hosted a discussion on “The Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Sports Industry,” with young leaders driving the agenda forward.
In Latin America, a pivotal moment unfolded with the launch of the Manifesto for Sustainable Sport by SIGA LATIN AMERICA’s Permanent Committee on Environment, Sustainability, and Social Responsibility. This groundbreaking document calls on the global sports community to uphold the highest standards of environmental stewardship, sustainability, and social responsibility. The Manifesto paves the way for a new SIGA pillar focused on sustainability, complementing existing standards, and underscoring SIGA’s commitment to a future where sport serves as a beacon of ethical and sustainable practices.
Day 6: Turkey Joins the Movement
The sixth day of Sport Integrity Week spotlighted two “premiers” as the event unfolded simultaneously in Turkey and Brazil:
- In Turkey, the prestigious Bahçeşehir University hosted the webinar “Women’s Leadership and Governance in Sports.” Prominent speakers, including the national women’s football coach Necla Güngör, led discussions on gender equity, inspiring future generations to champion inclusivity in sports governance.
- Across the Atlantic in Brazil, the Panathlon International Ethics Sport Summit 2024 took center stage in Sorocaba. This event brought high-level sports leaders together to address critical topics such as doping, ethics, and match-fixing, reinforcing SIGA’s core values and the importance of ethics in sport.
