The Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) on Match Fixing and Sports Betting of the Brazilian Federal Senate, chaired by Senator Jorge Kajuru, approved a request from Senator and former football player Romário de Souza Faria to invite Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros, Global CEO of SIGA, and Chairman and CEO of SIGA LATIN AMERICA, SIGA AMERICA, and SIGA EUROPE, to participate in a special hearing and share SIGA’s global expertise in independent certification of Integrity standards in Sport.
In the requirement submitted to the Senate to invite Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros, Senator Romário emphasized that “SIGA is an international coalition distinguished in the assessment and certification of Good Governance and Integrity Universal Standards in Sport”. He also acknowledged SIGA’s and SIGA LATIN AMERICA’s leading role on Sport Integrity and evoked the cooperation agreements signed with UEFA, Liga Portugal, and the CBF, amongst others, as well as SIGA’s invaluable expertise in implementing best practice on good governance and sports betting integrity.
The CPI is investigating allegations and suspicions of match-fixing in Brazilian football, involving players, officials and betting companies, following recent operations led by the Brazilian Public Prosecutor’s Office and police authorities.
The date for the hearing is yet to be determined.
Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros, Global CEO of SIGA, and Chair and CEO of SIGA LATIN AMERICA, stated:
“I accept, with satisfaction, the invitation made by the Brazilian Federal Senate to collaborate with the CPI on Match-Fixing and Sports Betting. SIGA and SIGA LATIN AMERICA acknowledge the significance of the mission carried out by the CPI, and we are fully committed to ensure that Sport in Brazil is regulated, governed and operated in accordance with the highest standards, with Good Governance, Integrity and Transparency.
Just as we are developing the Independent Study on the Future of Brazilian Football, commissioned by the Congress, and have established game-changing cooperation agreements with the Ministry of Sport, the Parliamentary Front for Football Modernization, and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), we will respond positively to the Senate’s request.
Preventing and combating Match-Fixing and Sports Betting Manipulation has been a fight of mine over the past 30 years. It is one of the fundamental pillars that underpin SIGA’s reformist vision and one of the four strategic areas on which we developed Universal Standards, all that with the goal of protecting Sport Integrity, restoring its reputation and regaining its credibility. You can count on SIGA and SIGA LATIN AMERICA!”
