The Sport Integrity Global Alliance (SIGA) and its member, the Ponta Delgada Municipality have just announced a high-level Dinner-Debate featuring Lord Jonathan Marland, Chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council, and member of the SIGA EUROPE Advisory Board.

Inaugurating a series of impactful thought leadership initiatives to be carried out throughout the year, this will be an invite-only event. The focus of this kick-off Dinner-Debate could not be more appropriate: “Economic Development, International Relations and Sport Integrity“. It will take place on Friday, the 19th of April, at a prestigious venue in São Miguel’s capital city, Ponta Delgada, in the Azores archipelago.

Lord Marland, who has served as the UK’s Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy and the Minister of Energy and Climate Change, will share his vast experience and insights on international trade, diplomatic relations, and environmental policy, and their intersections with the world of Sport. The debate will explore the unique role that Sport can exert, if governed, operated and played under the highest integrity standards, as a dynamo of social, educational and cultural impact, and a booster of economic growth, sustainable development and positive synergies at both regional, national and global level.

SIGA’s co-founder and Global CEO, Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros, will also deliver a keynote address, building on his 30+ years of experience at the helm of leading sports organisations, including the Portuguese League, European Leagues, and the World League Association, and international organisations such as the European Commission, World Economic Fórum, and OECD, among others.

Pedro Nascimento Cabral, Mayor of Ponta Delgada and host of the event will welcome the international and regional guests, sharing vision on the relevance of Sport Integrity in International Relations to promote Economic Development.

The exclusive Dinner-Debate is part of the action plan designed by SIGA and Ponta Delgada Municipality to usher Sport into a new era of enhanced governance and integrity by implementing the SIGA Universal Standards, and independent assessments, such as the SIGA Independent Rating and Verification System (SIRVS). This and other goals were set in 2022, when Ponta Delgada Municipality signed a large-scale agreement to become a SIGA member.

Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros, SIGA’s Global CEO, emphasized the relevance of the Dinner-Debate to create bridges between Ponta Delgada and the Commonwealth community, keeping Sport Integrity as a driving force for development:

As a proud son of Ponta Delgada, the city where I was born and from which I set out into the world, it is always a pleasure to return home. I am encouraged by the leadership of Ponta Delgada and its Mayor, and the significance they attach to Sport, as a force for good and a catalyst for social and economic development. I have every confidence that the sport movement and the business leaders of Ponta Delgada and the wider Azores will seize this invaluable opportunity to showcase the great potential that exists right here.

I commend the Mayor of Ponta Delgada for his vision and for honouring his commitment to SIGA and our reform agenda. We will continue to bring thought leadership and the international community to this region, given its strategic geo-political position, at the heart of the Atlantic, uniting Europe and the Americas.”
