The SIGA multi-stakeholder task force in charge of drafting the Universal Standards on Youth Development & Protection in Sport, coordinated by SIGA AMERICA, completed its mission and submitted a preliminary draft for approval.

The document, which received thumbs up by the SIGA Council, at a meeting held last Tuesday, details with extreme precision the best-in-class standards that sports organisations need to meet in this field, and are applicable to national and international federations, leagues, clubs and youth academies, as well as their entourage.

Ensuring physical and psychological well-being, nutrition care, proper training plans, and integrity check and monitoring for coaches, medical staff and other personal involved in the development process of young people and children in sport, are just some of the requirements covered by the SIGA Universal Standards on Youth Development & Protection in Sport.

Sporting organisations must adopt a proactive stance to effectively any situation of physical and moral abuse of young athletes, smuggling and trafficking of minors and other harmful behaviours that continue affecting the most vulnerable individuals in sport, i.e. the children, and undermine Sport’s reputation into disrepute. The adoption of the SIGA Universal Standards by all sporting organisations is an urgent and indispensable step to achieve that goal.

SIGA will now initiate a public consultation phase with the aim of involving all pertinent stakeholders and collecting further inputs. The final version of the SIGA Universal Standards on Youth Development & Protection in Sport is expected to be approved and enter into force in March 2022.
