World Rugby in its capacity of #SIW2023 Hosting Partner, demonstrated their unwavering dedication to Integrity on the same week as the kick-off of the Rugby World Cup in France, by hosting a special session on this topic for match officials.

As part of their ongoing collaboration with the Sport Integrity Global Alliance (SIGA), the session covered a range of pertinent topics, including anti-corruption, criminal infiltration, match manipulation and reporting, amongst others. This initiative serves as another proactive step from World Rugby towards ensuring the highest integrity standards and organisational alignment ahead of the upcoming Rugby World Cup.

The training session was delivered by Stephan Smith, World Rugby’s Senior Legal Counsel, and SIGA were awarded observer status, with SIGA Senior Director of Research, Knowledge & Innovation Iain Lindsay attending today’s event in Paris, France.

The training session encompassed a comprehensive range of topics, including World Rugby’s Regulation 6 Framework, potential corruption threats, match manipulation, communications device policies, reporting mechanisms, and more. By equipping participants with the requisite knowledge, World Rugby aims to empower them to identify, prevent, and report any integrity-related challenges that may arise. World Rugby is undertaking a full programme of integrity-related education to all players, coaches and officials involved in this year’s World Cup.

Alan Gilpin, CEO of World Rugby, emphasized the significance of the event:

World Rugby is pleased to be a Hosting Partner of Sport Integrity Week 2023 and support SIGA’s continued drive to protect and enhance the integrity of sport. Integrity is a core value of World Rugby and is central to our sport on the field, and the governance of our sport off the field. The 2023 Rugby World Cup presents an opportunity to showcase the core values that global rugby embodies. Working with SIGA and valued partners such as Mastercard and Capgemini in this area allows us to ensure that fairness, transparency, and integrity are at the heart of developing the sport we love worldwide.

SIGA’s Global CEO, Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros, stated:

We are proud to have World Rugby as one of SIGA’s Hosting Partners during SIW2023. By placing integrity at the heart of the tournament, World Rugby is leading by example, demonstrating its commitment to championing integrity in sport and fostering an environment defined by trust, accountability, and ethical conduct. On behalf of SIGA, we look forward to continuing our ongoing collaboration with World Rugby and wish its team, as well as each participant and every fan, a fantastic and memorable World Cup!
